Wise Latina

I've spent the past two days glued to my TV watching Sonya Sotomayor's Senate Conformation Hearings.  It's been a fast-paced race switching between CNN and MSNBC (I don't bother with FOX NEWS).  On CNN, you get a good amount of this coverage but will be rudely interrupted by Michael Jackson's death coverage at any given time (did you know that Blanket's real name Prince Michael Jackson II?).  MSNBC has done a great job with the coverage but they cut off to too many commercials.  Actually, it's always the same fucking commercial.  The FREE CREDIT REPORT guy won't shut the fuck up and plagues my ears with his stupid fucking songs.  I hate this guy and I hope every woman in his family dies a slow death from cervical cancer and that he gets throat cancer too.  While I'm at it, include the ad agency that booked him too.  I'm going to boycott all things from FCR.  They don't deserve a moment of my time or a penny out of my cargo shorts.

Back to my boricua homegirl, Sonya.  I think she's more than qualified for the gig and it's great to see people of different backgrounds presiding the highest court of the land.  The problem is not her or whether she has "empathy" or this "Wise Latina" might be biased because she's a minority and a woman.  Senator Jeffery Sessions is the problem.  He's a Republican from Alabama and that should tell you everything you need to know right there but there's more.  There's always more.  In 1986, he was tapped by the Great Gipper himself for a federal bench but was rejected by the Senate panel because he seen to have had "gross insensitivity" to civil rights and pretty much anybody that is not white.  He got elected to represent the great state of Alabama in 1994 in the US Senate and now co-chairs the Senate panel that rejected him 23 years ago.  He's doing everything he can to smut dirt on her excellent record and is only winning favor with Newt Gingerich and Rush Limbaugh.  He forgets that she's apart of the fastest-growing minority group in the country and is harboring harsh words and slight hints of bigotry that others are listening to.  Watching him during these hearings, you get a sense that this former Eagle Scout looks like the kind of guy that would throw a fit eating at Johnny Rocket's because they play too much "colored music" in a family establishment.  I think after Sessions has a few more sessions looking like an outdated stiff old man, the moderate Republicans and other party bigwigs will come out in her support.  Even former President George HW Bush has publicly come out in her support.  I think Sessions Senate seat is secure in that backwater state of his but his prestige on the national level will be flat-lined.
